How to Cut Your Monthly Subscription Bill in India (Without Losing Much)

Subscription spend is uniquely easy to lose track of. Each one is small, each renews quietly, and none of them appear as a single line on your bank statement. The result is a household paying two or three thousand rupees a month for services it barely opens. Here is a thirty-minute audit that fixes it.

Step 1: find everything you are paying for

You cannot cancel what you cannot see. Three places to look:

  • Your email. Search for the words invoice, receipt, subscription and renewal, filtered to the last twelve months. This finds the ones you forgot about entirely.
  • Your bank and UPI app. Look for standing mandates or e-mandates. Under RBI rules recurring payments must be registered, so they are visible if you look.
  • Your app store. Both Google Play and the App Store keep a subscriptions list. This is where old free trials go to quietly become paid.

Write every one down with its monthly cost. The total is usually the shock.

Step 2: sort by last opened, not by price

This is the step people get wrong. The instinct is to cancel the most expensive thing. The right move is to cancel whatever you have not opened in thirty days, regardless of price.

A Rs 599 subscription you use daily is fine. A Rs 149 one you have not opened since March is pure waste, and it is the second one that is quietly costing you Rs 1,800 a year.

Step 3: cut in this order

  1. Not opened in 30 days — cancel now. You will not miss it, and you can always come back.
  2. Duplicates — two music services, three OTT platforms with overlapping catalogues. Keep the one you actually open.
  3. Overpaying on tier — a 4K plan on a phone, a family plan for one person. Drop the tier rather than the service.
  4. Annual plans renewing soon — these are the biggest single hits. Set a reminder a week before each one.

Step 4: stop the leak from coming back

  • Rotate seasonally. Cricket season, then a series you want, then pause. Almost nothing needs twelve months.
  • Prefer term plans over auto-renew. A plan that simply expires forces a conscious decision. Auto-renew makes the decision for you, always in the merchant’s favour.
  • Bundle only what you use. A combo pack is excellent value if you watch every app in it, and worse than useless if you watch three of five.
  • Set one calendar reminder per subscription, a week before renewal. Thirty seconds of setup, hundreds of rupees saved.

What is usually worth keeping

Not everything should go. The subscriptions that survive an honest audit tend to be the cheap daily ones and the ones that replace something more expensive:

  • A music subscription, if you listen daily — from Rs 59 a month it is one of the cheapest things on the list.
  • The one OTT service you actually watch, at the tier that matches your screen.
  • A work tool that saves you real hours — an AI subscription or Canva Pro if you use them weekly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find subscriptions I forgot about?

Search your email for invoice and receipt over the last twelve months, check your bank app for standing mandates, and open the subscriptions list in Google Play or the App Store.

What should I cancel first?

Anything you have not opened in thirty days, regardless of price. Usage matters more than cost when deciding what to cut.

Are combo packs a good way to save?

Only if you use every app included. A combo you half-use costs more than buying the two services you actually watch.

How do I stop subscriptions renewing without me noticing?

Prefer fixed-term plans that simply expire over auto-renewing ones, and set a calendar reminder a week before each renewal date.
