Windows licence keys are the easiest thing to buy badly. The price range online is enormous, the licence types are not explained anywhere obvious, and a key that activates today can be deactivated in a bulk sweep months later. Here is what to actually check.
Home vs Pro — do you need Pro?
Windows Home covers everything most people do. Pro adds features that matter to a specific set of users:
- BitLocker drive encryption — genuinely useful on a laptop you carry around.
- Remote Desktop hosting — connecting to the machine, not just from it.
- Hyper-V virtualisation — for running virtual machines.
- Domain join and group policy — only relevant on a managed office network.
If none of that means anything to you, Home is enough and Pro is money spent on features you will never open.
Licence types — the part that decides everything
- Retail — transferable to a new machine. The most flexible and the most expensive.
- OEM — permanently tied to the first machine it activates on. Cheaper, but it dies with the laptop.

How to check your key is genuine
- Go to Settings, then System, then Activation. It should read that Windows is activated with a digital licence or a product key.
- Note that Windows and Office are licensed separately. Activating one does nothing for the other.
