Canva Pro Free in India: The 4 Legitimate Ways (and Who Actually Qualifies)
“Canva Pro free” is one of the most searched phrases in India right now. Tens of thousands of people type some version of it every month, and almost everything written to answer them is either an advert or a trap.
So here is the honest version. There are four legitimate ways to use Canva Pro without paying for it, and three of them have strict eligibility rules that most people reading this will not meet. This guide tells you which one applies to you, and what to do if none of them do.
The short answer
Canva Pro is not free for the general public, and it never has been. What exists is:
- Canva Free — permanently free, and genuinely good.
- A Pro trial — real, time-limited, one per account, card required.
- Canva for Education — free Pro-level access, but K-12 teachers and schools only.
- Canva for Nonprofits — free Pro-level access for verified nonprofit organisations.
Anything else offering you Canva Pro at no cost is not one of these four. We will come back to why that matters.
1. Canva Free is better than most people realise
Before chasing Pro, check whether you actually need it. Canva Free includes a very large template library, thousands of free photos and graphics, unlimited designs, real-time collaboration and 5 GB of storage. For a student making assignment slides, a shopkeeper making a festival poster, or anyone posting occasionally to Instagram, Canva Free is frequently enough.
The honest test is this: open Canva Free and try to make the thing you actually need. If you finish it without hitting a locked feature, you have your answer and you can stop reading. Plenty of people pay for Pro and use two of its features.

2. The Canva Pro trial: real, but shorter than the internet thinks
Canva does offer a genuine Pro trial. Two things to know before you start it:
The length has changed. The trial was 30 days for years, and most articles still say 30 days. Canva has since shortened it for many users, and it also runs experiments where different accounts see different lengths. Check what your own signup screen says rather than trusting any article, including this one.
You need to enter a card. Starting the trial always requires payment details. You will not be charged if you cancel before it ends, but you do have to remember to cancel. Set a phone reminder for two days before the end date — this is the single most common way people end up paying for a subscription they meant to trial.
It is one per account. If you have used a Pro trial or subscription on that account before, you will not be offered another one.
If you have a specific project — a portfolio, a wedding invite, a month of social posts — a trial genuinely solves it. If you need Canva Pro continuously, a trial is not a plan.
3. Canva for Education: genuinely free, but narrower than you think
This is the one that causes the most confusion in India, because a lot of content implies any student or teacher can get it. That is not how it works.
Who is eligible, according to Canva’s own eligibility guidelines:
- K-12 certified teachers in an active teaching position
- School librarians, learning support assistants and curriculum specialists
- Technical and vocational school teachers serving primary or secondary students
- Government-recognised, formally accredited K-12 schools, school districts and departments of education
Who is not eligible. Canva states plainly that Canva Education “is not currently available for higher education teachers and institutions (colleges and universities).” Higher education is directed to a separate programme, Canva for Campus, which an individual student cannot simply sign up for — the institution has to be enrolled.
That is the crux of it. If you are a college or university student in India, Canva for Education is not for you. Most of the videos telling students otherwise are either out of date or describing something else entirely.
How verification works. If your email is on a recognised educational domain, access is usually immediate. If not, you upload a teaching licence, employment verification or a school ID showing your teaching status, and Canva reviews it within about 48 hours. Access continues while you remain an active eligible teacher, with re-verification roughly every three years.

4. Canva for Nonprofits: free for registered organisations
If you run or work for a registered nonprofit, Canva offers Pro-level access at no cost, in more than 190 countries, with up to 50 team members included.
You qualify if your organisation is officially recognised as a charity or nonprofit by the relevant authority, operates on a not-for-profit basis, or exists for public benefit. Eligibility is checked by a third-party verifier called Goodstack, and a decision usually takes up to seven days. In India that means having your registration documents ready — trust deed, society registration, Section 8 company papers, or your 12A/80G certificates.
You do not qualify if you are a school or university, a government or legislative body, a political organisation, a financial services business, a professional sports organisation, a job training or business development organisation, or a fraternity or mutual organisation. Canva excludes these explicitly.
What about the “free Canva Pro” links, files and invite tricks?
This is where most people searching this phrase end up, so it deserves a straight answer rather than a lecture.
If a website, video description or Telegram channel is handing out Canva Pro access to anyone who asks, the access is coming from somewhere it should not be. In practice that means one of a few things, none of them good for you:
- It stops working without warning. Access obtained this way is routinely revoked, usually at the least convenient moment. Designs you made inside someone else’s team can go with it.
- You lose your work. If you were added to a team account that gets removed, the designs living in that team are not yours to keep.
- Your account is exposed. Anything asking you to sign in through a page that is not canva.com, or to install a file to “unlock” features, is asking for your credentials or worse.
- It breaks Canva’s terms. Canva’s Terms of Use prohibit letting another party use the service with your login. Accounts found doing this can be closed — including yours.
None of that is moralising. It is simply what tends to happen, and it is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon on it.
If none of the four apply to you
Then Canva Pro is a paid product, and the real question is how to pay less for it rather than how to pay nothing.
Three legitimate levers:
- Pay annually instead of monthly. On almost every design subscription the annual rate is meaningfully cheaper per month. Only do this if you are confident you will use it for a full year.
- Share a Canva Teams plan properly. Canva’s own team plans let several people work under one subscription legitimately. If you have colleagues or classmates who also need Pro, this is the intended way to split the cost.

Frequently asked questions
Is Canva Pro free for students in India?
Not through Canva for Education, which is limited to K-12 teachers and schools and explicitly excludes colleges and universities. Some universities enrol in Canva for Campus, which would give their students access — check with your institution’s IT department rather than assuming.
How long is the Canva Pro free trial now?
It has been shortened from the 30 days most articles still quote, and Canva varies it between accounts. Check the length shown on your own signup page before starting, and set a reminder to cancel if you do not intend to continue.
Can I get Canva Pro free without a credit card?
Not for the trial — payment details are always required to start it. Canva for Education and Canva for Nonprofits do not require a card, but both require you to pass eligibility verification.
Will I lose my designs if I stop paying for Canva Pro?
Your designs stay in your account. What you lose is access to Pro-only assets and features inside them, so a design using a premium stock photo will show that element as locked until you upgrade again.
Is it safe to buy Canva Pro from a reseller?
It depends entirely on the reseller. The things worth checking are whether the plan is activated on your own account or on a shared one, whether there is a written replacement policy, whether the seller publishes real contact and refund details, and whether they are honest about not being affiliated with Canva. A seller unwilling to answer those questions before you pay is telling you something.
The bottom line
If you teach at a K-12 school, apply to Canva for Education today — it is free, it is legitimate, and it is better than anything else on this page. If you work for a registered nonprofit, apply to Canva for Nonprofits. If you have a one-off project, use the trial and set a cancellation reminder.
