Subscription Glossary: Private, Shared, On Mail and the Rest

The subscription resale market runs on jargon that nobody explains. Here is what each term actually means, including the parts sellers tend to leave out.

If a seller will not tell you which of these models you are buying, that is your answer. Walk away. The difference between a private account and a shared one is the difference between something you control and something that can stop working because a stranger changed a password.

Private account

An account nobody else is using. You get the login and you are the only person on it. It costs more than a shared plan because the seller cannot split the cost across several buyers.

Shared account

One platform account used by more than one person at the same time, each on a different profile. It is cheaper. The trade-off is that you do not control the account, and if someone changes the password everyone loses access — which is why changing login details voids the warranty.

Private profile

Your own profile on a shared account. Your watch history, recommendations and downloads are yours; the account underneath is still shared. Not the same thing as a private account.

On your email / on mail

The subscription is applied to an email address you supply, so the account belongs to you and stays with you when the term ends. Usually the safest model, and usually priced higher for that reason.

On your number

The subscription is applied to your own mobile number. Common with Indian platforms that sign you in by phone number rather than email. As with on-mail, the account is yours.

Pre-activated account

An account that already has an active subscription on it when it is handed to you. You receive credentials rather than an invite. Read the term carefully: what you are buying is the time remaining, not a fresh subscription.

Family slot

A place on someone else's family plan. The platform allows a fixed number of members; a slot is one of them. Family plans usually have rules about where members live, which is worth knowing before you buy.

Voucher / redemption code

A code you enter yourself on the platform to add subscription time. Once redeemed it cannot be reused or transferred, so a voucher that has already been used is worthless.

Licence key

A one-time activation code for software such as Windows or Office. It is not a subscription: it does not expire and there is nothing to renew. Retail keys can usually move to a new machine; OEM keys cannot.

Activation

The step that turns what you bought into working access — redeeming a code, accepting an invite, or signing in with supplied details. It is not automatic and not instant.

Term

How long the plan runs: one, three, six or twelve months. At SubsHub the term is fixed and the plan simply stops at the end of it.

Renewal

Buying more time when a term ends. At SubsHub this is always a new purchase you choose to make. Nothing is auto-debited, and no payment method is stored.

Replacement warranty

The seller's promise to restore access if it stops working before the term is up. At SubsHub this covers the full term, and is void only if you changed the login details yourself.

Reseller

A business that sells access to a platform it does not own or represent. SubsHub is one. It means SubsHub is responsible for delivery, support and the warranty — and that the platform itself has no relationship with SubsHub.

Simultaneous streams

How many devices can play at once. Set by the platform and the tier, not by the seller. This number, not the catalogue, is what usually decides which tier you actually need.

UPI

India's instant bank-to-bank payment system. Paying in rupees by UPI is what lets Indian buyers get international subscriptions without an international credit card that supports recurring billing.

Why this matters when you buy

Nearly every complaint in this market traces back to a buyer who did not know which model they had purchased. Someone buys a shared plan expecting a private account, changes the password because that felt sensible, and locks out four other people — and their own warranty with it.

Every SubsHub product page states its model in the Plan facts table, before you pay. If anything is still unclear, ask on WhatsApp before ordering rather than after.
